Delray Beach – Students at Morikami Park Elementary in Delray Beach are collecting new or gently used costumes for students at other schools who cannot afford to buy one. Assistant Principal, Dianne Rivelli-Schreiber said, “Part of the International Baccalaureate program which our school is an IB program, is to do community service and give back to the community, so our student council came up with the idea to collect costumes for the children at one of our sister schools which is also an IB school which is in Boynton, Forest Park Elementary.”
Jane Andrews, PTA President, said the school is teaming up with the organization, “ Free Costumes for Kids” to help students in Palm Beach County. This is the second year the school is helping. “The first thing we did was send out a flyer internally here in the school letting parents know what we were doing and how to send the costumes in a zip lock bag. And the second thing that we did as the PTA is we have an email blast that we send to parents once a week. Last year we collected about 60 to 75 costumes in our first year and we thought it was a good number. This year I think we have more than doubled that. It’s not just our school that is working on this, we have Sunrise Park that is collecting and then those costumes will come to us. We are kind of a hub for it”.
Rivelli-Schriber said, “It’s important for children to give back and to know that’s it more about the community at large and how we can help one another”.
