Free Costumes for Kids 2011 Campaign

  • October 3, 2011 2:28 pm

The Free Costumes for Kids 2011 Costume Drive is off to a great start.  In 2010 we were able to provide over 1,000 costumes to children in need.  This year we have been able to add two new chapters in Oregon and Nevada.  Several schools in the Palm Beach County area have also joined us.  We would like to welcome them to the organization.  Returning to us are Banyan Creek El., Sunrise Park El.,  Morikami Park El. , Polo Park Middle School, Congregational Church of God and the City of Parkland.  New members this year are Omni Middle School,  Sunrise Palms El.,  Water’s Edge El. and Liberty Park El.

Saturday, Oct. 15th, Free Costumes for Kids will be distributing costumes at the Migrant Education Event at Lantana Elementary from 9 – 10.  We are very excited about this opportunity.  The Boys and Girls Club of Delray will also be receiving costumes.  Our  coordinator  there, Nicole Ackerman, is very excited about having her students set goals in order to get a costume.  We are thrilled to be working with her and her team.

Welcome to our new chapters, CPHA in Portland, Oregon, and Carson H. S. in Carson City, Nevada.  If you are in those areas of the country, please see their drop off locations on our site.  We are so excited to have you on our team.

As always we will be collecting new and gently used costumes for children in need in our community.  If you have ideas or would like to volunteer or join us please send an email to chrismccarthy@freecostumesforkids.org  or call me at 904 392-5522.   Thanking you in advance for your support!

Steps for Implementing the Free Costumes for Kids Program In Schools
1.  Ask the principal for permission to implement the program.
2.  Set dates for the drive.  Make sure if there is a Halloween event planned to set the deadline for turning in costumes to leave time for organizing and distribution.  It is also a good idea to run a second collection after Halloween.
3.  Arrange to get collection boxes.
4.  Send out press releases through school newsletter and morning and dismissal announcements.  (Check out the examples on Free Costumes for Kids. Org)
5.  Send an email to teachers to ask for a list of how many kids in their classroom need a costume, boy/girl, and size.
6.  Bag, Tag and Stuff and Sort.  Make sure each costume is clean and in good condition and is neatly folded in a zip lock bag and labeled with permanent marker with Boy/ Girl and size (Child/Large, Adult/Small).  Print the Free Costumes for Kids motivational flyers, fold them in half and insert them into the costume bag.  (Flyer available for download on Free Costumes for Kids.Org.)  Sort them by size and gender in bins or large trash bags, for example, Girls/Small, Toddler)
7.  Sort the costumes and deliver them to the teachers.  If you need more costumes, send an email to chrismccarthy@freecostumesforkids.org.  We will arrange a time for someone to pick up additional costumes.  We will also arrange a time for you to deliver any extra costumes you have collected .

2nd Annual Costume Drive 2010

  • September 24, 2010 12:10 pm

Free Costumes for Kids is gearing up for its second annual costume collection drive.  Last year, Free Costumes for Kids was a big success providing over 400 new or gently used Halloween costumes to children in need in Palm Beach County.  In order to reach even more kids this year we are in need of the following:
1.  An air conditioned warehouse to store, organize and distribute costumes for October and November in South Palm Beach or North Broward County.
2.  Gallon and 2 gallon zip lock bags.
3.  Printing of our motivational flyers.
4.  Volunteers to sort, and organize costumes, deliver and pick up collection boxes and costumes.
5.  Volunteers to find collection sites.
If you can help, please contact Chris McCarthy at chrismccarthy@freecostumesforkids.org.   With your help we are changing lives, one costume at a time.

Through their newly acquired Disguise costumes line,  Jakks Pacific has donated 150 costumes to help Free Costumes for Kids provide 303 costumes for the kids of the Delray Parks and Recreations after school program.

Joe McCarthy of Free Costumes for Kids had this to say “The good people at Jakks Pacific came through in a big way.  Being that Delray Parks and Recreation’s program was one of our first costume requests,  and also the largest, it has been our number one goal to supply those costumes.  This donation will go a long way to meeting that goal.”

The costumes arrived today,  just it time for the Delray Beach Parks and Recreations Halloween Party this Friday.

The new store, located at 2231 Palm Beach Lakes Blvd in West Palm Beach, donated nearly 100 costumes to Operation Hope, which services hundreds of underserved families in Palm Beach County who suffer from homelessness, hunger and domestic abuse; and the Palm Beach County School District’s Migrant Education Program, which provides education to more than 2,000 school-age children in the migrant communities, primarily in the western part of the county.

“The kids we work with just don’t have much in the way of material things,” said Kenneth Bowers, Founder of Operation Hope. “We are so grateful to have this opportunity to put a smile on their faces – even just for a little while.”

Ben Patipa, Founder and CEO of The Garage Sale Depot, says his store is honored to work with such worthy organizations. “Being involved in our community is a priority for us,” says Patipa. “If there is a way we can help, then we will. We’re just happy to be involved.”

On Saturday, October 31, children from Operation Hope will be participating in a special Halloween trick or treat event at Howell Park in West Palm Beach, beginning at 5 pm.
